“Church Girl” is one of my favourite songs on Renaissance. From my first listen of that album, it was a song that I was immediately obsessed with. It’s a funny ol’ song. Because it IS silly and ridiculous, and yet also profound. I know that “Church Girl” represents speaks to so many Black women and those who were raised in church the whole time they were LGBTYONCE+ and therefore have a strange relationship with Christianity and religion. And I think that’s the magic of the song. It’s silly, it’s ridiculous, it’s feel good, it’s meaningful, it makes you feel seen. Baby. That’s the Renaissance.

HENNYWAY.

All this to say, that how fun and ridiculous “Church Girl” is, is why I felt no hesitatation when the idea came to me to mix it with Girls’ Generation’s “Gee”. Because the Korean church girls who like to shake ass should feel seen to.

And fuck what Juanita Bynum says. The Lord does not judge a greazy leg or a ho spirit.
